Notes from the Editor
There are four skills in learning English. Among
them, writing is an important approach at verifying learners’ vocabulary of idioms
and expressions, grammar and structure. It is also a good way for teachers to explain
to students’ their errors and make corrections in a visual way. By writing in
English, students think and practice individually. Nowadays, many TESL
(Teaching English as a Second Language) books emphasize the importance of
interactive learning. Writing offers students the opportunity to express
themselves with fewer inhibitions and on an active basis,
Writing
a composition is not so easy but also not difficult. If you have a very clear
structure of writing focusing on the main theme, you will have a well-written
English composition. Before starting writing, an outline is very important.
Some people write long disorganized paragraphs that create confusion and
ambiguity. So before you write, I suggest you have an outline in your mind. It
is best to write it down.
Basic writing structure includes
an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction presents the topic
of the composition, the body conveys the main ideals, and the conclusion
summarizes the piece. Every paragraph should be dedicated to one main idea. The
paragraphs should tie in together in a coherent manner. After the teacher has
given feedback, the composition should be further edited and rewritten. Learn
from your mistakes! By editing and correcting the paper yourself, you will
improve. In time and with practice, writing becomes easier.
An
important thing to remember is that Chinese and English language patterns are
different. Try not to translate directly as this can cause problems. For example,
in Chinese one may say “He is a filial child” but in English, the same idea is
expressed differently. An English speaker would say, ”He is an obedient son”.
In
addition, keep your writing simple, using vocabulary with which you are
familiar. Many scholars encourage English language learners to use common
vocabulary instead of writing difficult and superfluous words. Dr. Mary
Finocchiaro in her book, English as a Second Language---From Theory to Practice
suggests first thinking of how you would say something before writing on paper.
For high school students, in my point of view, it is better to use words, which
people usually express in their daily life. In this case, they also can
practice their spoken English while they are writing.
I

H3-3 李雪慧
SES is a group of three. Their names are Sea, Yujin
and Shoo. Sea is the lead vocalist of SES. She sings very well, and she has a
beautiful voice.
They are not very tall, but look tall on TV. They are all wearing gray
coats, and silver clothes. Sea has big eyes and she is wearing a cross. She
wears a coat that is decorated with fur. Shoo has big and half moon shaped
eyes. She has a big mouth and teeth like a rabbit. She dyed her hair and she is
wearing earrings and a ring. Yujin has a wide forehead and big nose. She has a
curly hair and she dyed her hair purple. Of the three members, I like Sea very
much.
SES’s first song is ‘ I’m your girl.’ Their music style is Rhythm and Blues.
They also have many fans in Japan. They are currently there. I hope they come
back to Korea and I hope they will make release their next album soon.

My favorite star is Ta-key. He is Japanese. He is in his 20’s. The first
time I saw him, he was on TV. His appearance caught my attention. He is very
tall and slim. He has wind blown hair and looks very cool. He has big eyes and
nice eyebrows. His birthmark, which is under his right eye, is his most charming feature.
Most
of the clothes he wears always set trends. get popular. In this picture, he is wearing a
bright T-shirt with a checked jacket over top. Ta-key has his own ring that was
designed by himself.
The
ring is very expensive but many young Japanese people like to imitate
it.

They are the three members of H.O.T. They are a Korean music group. They
are planning to make their come back on TV at the end of November. Now they are busy with
vocal lessons. They are also studying music very hard. They will be presenting new
and different music styles.

“ping pong ball” because her face is so small. Her hobbies are listening

Agiler. I think she is a good singer.

He is a Korean singer.
He looks very strong and
cute.

him and so do I. Some people criticize
him a playboy. Even though he
is a playboy, I really do not care because he is
so charming that I cannot control my desire.

This is a French.
He is also a star in Korea. He has got really
beautiful eyes and most of his women fans adore his eyes. He also has a pointed, long nose and a very delicate mouth His face is chiseled and
very striking. He looks very charming. He has many fan clubs.
He came to Korea in 1999. I am told that he knows several different languages.
He speaks Korean well also. I think he is very smart. When he was a child he
learned Tae-Kwon-Do. However, he did not learn continuously. One of the episodes in
his T.V. program is about Tae-Kwon-Do. He is not as flexible as
he was a child so he had a lot of difficulties when he was shooting this episode. Although he is foreign, he is still very famous on the KOREA TV channel.

This is Kim Hee-sun. The reason that I
like her is because she is very pretty. She has big eyes and a small face.
Though she is an actress, she sings very well also.
In foreign countries, especially in Taiwan, she is very popular. She is my idol. I really like her style and the way she performs. Every time she appears on screen, everything about her such as her clothes, accessories and hairstyle always get popular among young Korean girls. I like her very much. I hope she will always be so young and fashionable like now.

unleashed anthrax in letters throughout the USA to continue his assault.

When I was born in this world the first
person I met was my mother. I cannot remember being an infant. I have a faint
memory from when I was three years old. One day I made a mistake and broken my
mother’s favorite vase. I was at a loss for what to do and started to cry.
Mother came tome and made sure I was safe and sound. I was relieved. My mother
is very enthusiastic about my education. When I was a little older, she began
to teach me Han-gul, English and arithmetic. Most of all, she places much importance
on ethics and morality. She thinks one’s character is based on that. Authority
is also important to her. I have thought she is a strict person since I entered
elementary school. If I made a mistake she would scold me severely and blame my
unserious attitude. At that time, I was so unpleasant about her strictness. Now
I understand her better. She always reminds me about the changing of the
weather and asks me to wear enough clothes. When I fail exams, she always
encourages me to recover my confidence. As yet, I don’t have to worry about
living. I always have a good environment for studying. If I need more she will
support me more. I should study hard and not let my parents disappointed. I

every weekend. She taught me the principles and gives me some advice. Besides

When I think of
the words “birth” and “love”, the first person who I think of is my mother.
She is forty years old this year. Since
she gave birth to us. She worked so hard in raising us. When we are sick, she
does not sleep well. She prays for us to become healthy. Now, she gets up
earlier than anyone in our family. She is also the latest person who is last to
go to bed. After school, I go to many academies to learn. I go back home so
late at night. But the person who always waits for me is my mother. When I do
something difficult, I think of my mother. She loves us but sometimes we get
angry with her for no reason. Even still, she remains strong. When I see her face, I feel so sorry
for her. She touches my heart in a way that cannot be seen.
I have become
bad in some ways these days. I feel quilt about it. My mother was worried about
me because of it. I know it is wrong and it is not the way to become a good son
for her. So I decided to go the right way in my life. It is hard to do the work
that I should do on my own but I will become a great person because of her
love.

me, she scares me a lot.

cooking and her food is very delicious. At last, my mother is interested in
playing the computer and helping me with my homework. I think the mother plays
an important role in the family. For example, in the morning when we go to school
my mother has to get up very early to prepare breakfast for us. Even after we
leave, my mother still keeps busy doing housework. She stays with my puppy at
home during the daytime. She does not have time to take a rest all day. That

When I was 12 years old, my father was

now because he is getting old day by day.

senior high school student, he always got the first grade in his class. My

my family. He is a diplomat. I always feel that he drinks too much, so I worry
about his health. He is improving it at all, but I wish that he could stop
drinking and stop to yelling at us in the evenings.
I am just a normal student. I have my
parents and a younger brother. I fight with my brother at times. But we always
think about each other very much. I will take the entrance examinations for university
in about 6 months. I always feel very tired and my life seems so hard. I want
to study during the winter vacation. So my grades in school will get better. My
father always likes to tell me about his boyhood experiences. However, I can’t
waste my time now because I have already wasted too much. I shall study hard
and make a good life for myself.
No matter how difficult my life will
get, in this world that can be so cruel, I still want to persist and overcome
all challenges. No matter the future in front of me is so cold, deserted, and
rocky. I will cross it and climb it to reach my goal. I want to succeed to let
my father be proud of me.
Why Should I Learn English

of all, English is an international language and most people in the world use
it. Secondly, if you want to be admitted to a university, you must learn
English well because many books are written in English. Thirdly, if you want to
travel, you must speak English well because many countries would use English to
communicate with foreigners. Finally, on the internet many sites are written in
English.
I hope my English
will be good because my dream is to be a doctor of Chinese medicine. I need to
pass the medical examination which includes an English test. I also hope my
mother’s language, Chinese, will become an international language too.

Why do we need to learn English? Most people use
English as a second language in the world. Firstly, we can travel around the
world if we speak English. Secondly, we can have a conversation with
foreigners. There are lots of useful things available to us if we know English

There are six members in my family. My parents

cautious. But we do share many interests.

My name is Chuan-fu Lee. I am 18 years
old. I am a little slim but I have a strong and healthy body. My hair is black
and my eyes are black too. Some people tell me that my eyes look very sharp. I
am 171 centimeters tall and 58 kg in weight. I am Chinese but I was born in
Korea. Now I live in Seoul and study in the Overseas Chinese High School.
I love to go to Taiwan and Hon Kong
because there is a lot of delicious food over there. I am especially really
crazy about Taiwan’s fried chicken. I also like any kind of fruit such as
apples, oranges, mangoes, watermelons and pineapples. They just test so
delicious! My favorite sport is swimming. When I swim in the swimming pool, I
feel I really can relax myself. Therefore, I enjoy it very much.
My best friend is Sunny. He is my classmate and sits
near me. Although he has a big head, I still like him. I have a girlfriend who
is really like an angel but sometimes also like a horrible devil. Even though
she is like a devil at times, I still cannot leave her. I agree with the saying
“Love is blind.”

Joe. I would like to introduce myself to all of you. I am a senior at Overseas
Chinese High School. There are three people in my family: Father, Mother and
me.
My hobby is
playing sports. My favorite sports are inline skating and basketball. My
favorite subject is English. I plan to major in English at college. To achieve
my goal, I know I must study hard. Why do I have this plan? It is because I
want to be the owner of a restaurant and become a famous businessman. This is
what I have wanted to be since I was young.
I want to live
in Singapore when I am older because it is a very clean and quiet country. I
believe I can do it. As a senior, I know there is not much time left. I want my

I prefer country life to city life. My city,
Seoul is the biggest and the capital of South Korea. Seoul is one of the most
modern cities in the world. “Kim-Chi” (Pickled Cabbage) and “Chi-Gae”(Hot Soup)
are famous Korean food. It’s warm in spring, hot in summer, cool in autumn and
cold in winter. The four seasons are very clear and distinct. Also one can see
beautiful plants flowering, rain drizzling, fallen leaves falling romantically
and a snowy landscape. Many tourists come here to travel each year, especially
in the winter for skiing. The World Cup will be held in Korea this year and
many people will come here to see the games.
Seoul is located on northern end of South Korea
and just near In-Chon which is on the sea. It’s very convenient to go and see
and enjoy the sea and seafood. We also can see many boats sailing on the sea.
You can imagine how wonderful it is. The landscape along the road makes
everyone thoughtful. You can live in Seoul with a life of ease and most of the
things are of good quality. So you don’t have to worry about difficult things
in Seoul. At last, I want to tell the people all over the world “Welcome To
Seoul!!!”
Teen Life (American teenagers)

North American
teenagers have a lot of opportunities to socialize in their schools. Many of
them join after-school groups, like photography, chess or drama clubs. Every
year, most schools put out a yearbook. The yearbook committee is a popular
group of which to be part.
Most schools
have teams for various sports, particularly those that do not require expensive
equipment such as volleyball, basketball, soccer and field hockey. Large
schools with more money for sport programs will often have football teams as
well.
Another element of most junior and
senior high schools is a school band. Students who want to learn to play an
instrument, or who are already quite good, join band classes that are part of
the school curriculum. Along with cooking and drama, band class is usually an
elective (a course the students can choose to take).
Throughout the
year, schools will have dances for the students. Valentine's Day and Christmas
are popular times to have these dances. A “prom” (promenade) is a formal school
dance; the most important one being the senior “prom” or “grad” (graduation) dance.

think the spring and fall seasons are beginning to disappear. When spring comes
all of the animals wake up. During the summer the flowers are in full bloom and
all the trees have leaves. The bright hot sun shines everywhere. Some people
feel summer is a bad season because at times, people are more irritable. When
fall comes all the trees lose their leaves. The fall is a good season for
reading books. During the winter, the snow covers the streets, the roofs of
houses and trees. The spring vacation is in May. Most people are busy. The
summer is good season for people to go outdoors. I feel that summer is the best
season because there are a lot of holidays. In winter we have a long vacation.
There is a lot of rain in autumn. People get wet easily during the rainy days.
I like spring because we can see many insects, animals, mountains, trees and
beautiful flowers. Every season has all its own special characteristics.
My Weekend
H3-4 冷宜學
I always want to have an unusual weekend. I plan to go to
the pyramid of Egypt. On Saturday, in the very early morning, I will prepare
all the equipment that I will need for this adventure. My aim is to find gold,
jewelry, and ancient money.
I will arrive at the largest pyramid with my assistant,
whose name is Duk Jae. In the afternoon, I will go to the biggest Egyptian
King’s tomb to see his mummy. Although it is so fearful and thrilling for me, I
will do my best to look. I think it will be very interesting! On Saturday
night, we will take a rest and wait for the next day.
On Sunday, I will achieve my goal. I
will go to the pyramid’s biggest tomb secretly. Inside, there must be a lot of
treasure waiting for me to dig out. I will finish my work as soon as possible.
After I find something valuable, I will take it with me to my home. From that
time, I guess I will be the richest person in the world. Ha! Ha! Ha! My weekend
ends here. Don’t you think it will be a fantastic weekend?
My Weekend

This weekend my
family is going to go to Tokyo and Okinawa in Japan to spend our weekend. Here
are our plans: We will take an airplane to Tokyo on Friday night.
On
Saturday morning, I plan to see the Tokyo tower. Next, I am going to visit Mt.
Fuji. Afterwards, I will go to visit my Japanese friend from Osaka. In the
afternoon, I am going to go shopping with my mother at the biggest department
store in Tokyo. We will buy some shoes for my father, a bag for my mother, a
wallet for my younger sister and a nice T-shirt that has the Tokyo tower on it.
At lunch, we plan to eat raw fish (Sashimi), a famous Japanese dish. After our
lunch, we will take a train to Okinawa.
In the evening, we will arrive in Okinawa. We will go to the beach and see some fireworks. I guess it will be very beautiful! We will stay at Okinawa for a night and leave from Japan on Sunday afternoon to return to Seoul. I have classes early Monday morning. I am looking forward to this weekend very much. I can hardly wait.
